Rock band 'salutes' AC/DC this weekend

A Raleigh-based rock band is bringing its act to Roanoke Rapids this weekend.

Thunderstruck is scheduled to perform Saturday night at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre. The band, founded five years ago by guitarist Jeff Young, is an AC/DC tribute band. Young, no relation to AC/DC's famed guitarist Angus Young, said during an interview Tuesday afternoon, this is not his first AC/DC tribute band.

"I had another AC/DC band many years ago," Young said. "I've known this band's singer (Lee Robinson) since he was about 6 or y years old. He actually got called by talent agency CAA - Creative Artists Agency - after Brian Johnson left the band to try out for the band. He got to stay in the same hotel as (Guns N' Roses front man and founder) Axl Rose and got to hang out with the band."

Young added, this weekend's performance is not the first time he has performed at the Roanoke Rapids Theater. He shared a story explaining that many years ago, his band at the time opened for an incarnation of famed '80s hair metal band RATT.

"When we went on stage, we got to play maybe 10 minutes, and RATT's stage manager didn't let us have more time," Young said. "Later, the theater's management at the time came to us after RATT finished and asked us if we would go back on, so we did and we played for another 80 minutes or so. The theater's management came back to us afterward and thanked us, saying we saved the show."

AC/DC's hit 1980 album "Back in Black" and the band's 1979 album "Highway to Hell" are among the band's best works, according to Young.

"Those albums have such great songs," he said. "They have so many shining moments. That is because of the work of (producer) Robert John "Mutt" Lange."

Along with his work with AC/DC, Lange has also produced albums for artists and acts, such as Shania Twain, The Cars and Maroon 5.

Roanoke Rapids Theatre Box Office Manager Lisa allen talked about the tickets for this weekend's show, which begins at 8 p.m., and other scheduled to take place.

"It's the best entertainment in town this weekend," allen said. "We have tickets for $20. Can't beat that! We also have a comedy show on Friday night beginning at 8. Tickets for the Comedy Zone are $10 at the door. It's a great weekend of entertainment here at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre."

As a lifelong fan of AC/DC, I tend to be a pretty tough judge of tributes... but when I saw Thunderstruck, they really impressed me!  Whether they're covering classics from the Bon Scott era or songs from the Brian Johnson catalog, Thunderstruck nails it!
